Electromyography is used to diagnose diseases of the peripheral nerves and muscles. Spontaneous electromyography is used to look for spontaneous electrical activity (positive sharp waves, fibrillations) in the muscles. This allows conclusions to be drawn about diseased muscles and nerves. As movement impairs the examination, this examination must also be carried out under anesthesia. Electromyography is supplemented by nerve stimulation studies, measurement of nerve conduction velocity, repetitive nerve stimulation and F-wave diagnostics to diagnose diseases of the neuromuscular endplate and peripheral nerves. A Viking Quest (Viasys®) device is available for all examinations.
